MOCKOULO SAWANE

Djembe & Serouba Master

Moctar "Mockoulo" Sawane is from the rich musical culture of the Casamance region of Senegal. He has been returning to the UK since 2003 as an inspirational drum teacher and outstanding soloist performer. Now based in East Scotland, he offers workshops in the serouba, djembe and dundun arrangements of the West African Mandinka, and also performs with his band BiTilo.

Mockoulo’s style and range of musicianship is thrilling to hear and watch. A versatile drum master, he has a vast repertoire of traditional rhythms and songs.

Since a young age when he was hardly big enough for his djembe, Mockoulo has earned a fantastic recognition for his abilities. He has been involved with numerous groups, as band leader of Ballet Banacabou in Ziguinchor and later playing with Jalikunda.

In the UK, he is known as one of the great drum masters and has gained a reputation for the clarity and humour in which he delivers his classes, as well as the energy he brings to performance. Mockoulo can be heard on the Blood Diamond film soundtrack and can be seen regularly at festivals throughout the UK including African Drum Village, WOMAD, Tribe of Doris, Drum Camp and Rhythm and Grooves.
